Living Water

COME TO THE WATER

 Steve W. Reeves

“Come quickly!”  The woman’s voice brimmed with excitement as she hurried along the narrow streets of her village. ““Come, see a man who told me all the things that I have done” (John 4:29).

She had no theological degree. She had lived a rough life going from husband to husband (five of them). She was frowned upon because of her ethnicity, gender and morality. There was nothing about her that was noteworthy. Little did she suspect, as she went about the mundane task of drawing water from a well, that she would encounter a man who would change her life. She didn’t even know His name.

With a soft, direct manner the unidentified man had told her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water” (John 4:10). Intrigued, the woman replied, “Give me this living water.” The prospect of never-ending water that would eliminate the burdensome trips to the well was enticing. The fact that this strange Jewish man even spoke to her was noteworthy. The longer they talked the more she realized He was no ordinary man. She speculated, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet (John 4:19). Ultimately she would realize that He was more than a prophet. Much more.

She could not wait. She had to tell others. “This is not the Christ is it” (John 4:29)? This was news that she was compelled to share. She could not keep it to herself. Because of her testimony, “many of the Samaritans believed in Him” (John 4:39).

How many people would come to Christ if you and I would simply follow this woman’s example and tell others of the man who gives “water springing up into eternal life” (John 4:14).

Do you know someone who needs to come to the water?
